A little history from my research. On March 16th 2001 with the help of Cornell University food scientists and students and couple Mary Ann and George Clark, owners of Mac-farms, came up with e-Moo, carbonated milk energy drinks for kids 5-6ish. Intended to make Milk into a soda-like, after noticing school milk cartons being turned down in favor of soda by children.
On August 13th 2003 it was announced that Cornell and Mac-Farms who was the dairy supply for the previously mentioned parties had struck a deal with a bottling plant in Cooperstown N.Y. for the bottling of e-Moo, and RPM(another healthy alternative carbonated milk based energy drink – Refreshing Power Milk – which was aimed at Women and older teens.) starting on the 27th of that month. That same year an article was published by the New York Times(its an archive link for the article – fuck paywalls). On RPM and e-Moo’s intro to the market along with the origins of the products and interviews about them. the article is mildly interesting but this is a great stand out third hand quote:
“Quite simply, having an orange dairy beverage is exciting,”
In 2004* the Mac Farms almost went through with a contract with New York Schools to add e-Moo to products sold in school cafeterias along with normal milk. This was almost a done deal but their production facilities weren’t up to code for large orders and they ran out of money(and went bankrupt? idk how energy milk finances work) and assumedly their contracts ended not long after.
On January 31st 2005, Assumedly e-Moo and RPM still in stores and production at a smaller scale by then at this date, which is when the photos above were taken by retired Colorado based candy and weird food blogger*, Robb “(diet)coke-babies” Posch(and current Jan-Pro branch VP) in his review found here on this lovely slice of internet history. Personally they sound disgusting and I would never dare drinking anything with MALGAXE on the bottle, but shouts out to Robb for describing the tastes and getting sick in the process off of ‘Orange Sparkle’.
November 18th 2019, George and Mary-Ann would win second place with a submission to a California Milk run contest “Milk Accelerator” with the intent on raising specifically; the declining sales and consumption for liquid milk based products, which were already at a down turn back when e-Moo was 'innovated’. The product they had this time was PERQ+, a lactose free based carbonated milk drink similar to a carbonated smoothie(?) described as:
PERQ+ is not only lactose free, lower in calories and higher in protein, but has the mouth feel of regular soda. It also retains milk’s other nutritional properties, including vitamin A, vitamin D and calcium, without the earlier viscosity.
At some point during this push to make PERQ+ go main stream they got the domain gotperq.com which was supposed to be their version of the famous 'got milk?’ campaign by the american dairy industry. the wix site subscription went offline sometime between May 2021 and December 2021 but thank the stars for it was archived in some capacity. it mainly uses stock dairy related pictures and the only available image i can find of actual PERQ+ bottles are these
While we can’t see the Coulors clearly through the blue plastic bottles i’m almost positive that the orange flavor retains its Nuka-Cola Victory-like shade of Orange radiation and Creamsicle vomit.
As far as I can tell I don’t think America is ready for carbonated milk drinks besides the occasional experiments from newly christened Soda-Stream owners and people who try things from specialty Import Markets on a dare.
Internationally I’ve seen a handful examples of carbonated dairy drinks from Korea, Japan, Turkey, and Russia. Alternatively one could infer that Mary-Ann and George just kinda have shite taste and are trying too hard to make soda out of milk.
